Merced County CCW Class & Application Guide
Yes — the classroom portion of your Merced County CCW training can be completed online. CaliforniaCCWOnline provides access to an approved online training pathway for Merced County applicants, with separate paths for resident initial, resident renewal and eligible non-resident applicants.
Live-fire qualification is completed separately, in person, with an appropriate qualification provider. That qualification fee is paid directly to the live-fire instructor and is not included in the online course price.

Merced Resident — Initial Application

- · New applicants are required to complete 16 hours of firearms training.

- · Renewal applicants are required to complete an 8-hour firearms training course.
- · Renewals are submitted through the Sheriff's online application process.
- · This is a different training and application path from a new application — a renewal course does not satisfy an initial application, and an initial course is not the renewal requirement.
- · Live-fire re-qualification is arranged separately with an appropriate qualification provider.
Merced County non-resident CCW applications
The Merced County Sheriff's Office publishes a dedicated non-resident CCW process. Eligibility rules, documentation and the order of steps are different from the resident process — read the official instructions before starting.
You must reside outside California and meet Merced's current non-resident eligibility rules.
Merced currently requires membership in one of the organizations identified by the Sheriff's Office.
The application is submitted online, with required identity, address and membership documentation.
Merced uses a virtual interview process for non-resident applicants.

Live-fire is a separate step — and a separate fee
The online/classroom course and the live-fire qualification are two different components of the Merced County training requirement. The live-fire qualification fee is paid directly to the live-fire instructor or provider and is not included in the online course price. Merced County maintains requirements concerning recognized and approved training providers, so confirm that your qualification provider is acceptable to the Sheriff's Office before you pay for a range session.
Firearms on the permit
Merced County currently requires applicants to demonstrate proficiency and safe handling with each firearm to be listed on the permit. Merced allows a maximum of five firearms.
Course of fire
Applicants must complete the Sheriff's required live-fire qualification. The specific course of fire — distances, rounds, targets and passing standard — is set by the Sheriff's Office and can change, so review the official Training Standards & Course of Fire before qualifying.
